Job Description

The City of Naperville seeks an Engineering Inspector who is skilled in performing inspections of residential and commercial construction sites, maintenance improvement projects, and capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with the City’s adopted codes and requirements. This position’s vital responsibilities are tied closely to City development, new construction and municipal maintenance improvement programs.

Duties

  • Reviewing approved engineering plans for new development projects and populating all needed site inspections.
  • Reviewing record drawings for compliance with approved engineering plans.
  • Attending pre-construction meetings for new development projects.
  • Attending Surety meetings.
  • Enforcing codes and quality control for a variety of construction materials & practices.
  • Ensuring contractors’ compliance with plans & specifications.
  • Providing top-notch customer service to Naperville residents by performing inspections regarding right-of-way concerns.
  • Meeting with architects, contractors, builders and the public (explaining requirements and restrictions).
  • Conducting follow-up inspections and recommending stop orders and/or citations for non-compliance of project plans & specifications.
  • Acting as the first point of contact on assigned projects.
  • Conducting in-field inspections of multiple, on-going projects (underground utilities, roadway, sidewalk, curb etc.).
  • Performing inspection of sanitary sewer and water disconnects.
  • Performing inspection of watermain installation, pressure testing, chlorination, and samples.
  • Performing inspection of sanitary sewer air tests, deflection tests (mandrel), and vacuum tests.
  • Performing final inspection on all utilities installed for occupancy or Letter of Credit reductions.
  • Performing inspection of subgrade proof-roll, stone road base proof-roll, and paving inspection. 
  • Performing final inspection for commercial paving/placement markings.
  • Performing inspection of site erosion control and traffic control.
  • Performing inspection of utility street patches.
  • R.O.W. inspections for various utilities, including but not limited to gas, communication, etc.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Note: The Engineering Inspector is regularly required to stand/ walk on uneven surfaces and is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. This role occasionally transports objects weighing 5-50 pounds.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma supplemented by specialized/vocational training in the building trades.   

  • Three years’ work experience with construction projects within urban environment, including residential and commercial developments; or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.

  • A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.   

Preferred:

  • IDOT Certificate of Proficiency in Documentation of Contract Quantities
