The City of Naperville’s Department of Public Works seeks Summer Intern for full-time summer employment for the 2026 season. Duties  include both office and field work (in all weather conditions). Work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Term of employment is for approximately 13 - 14 weeks, from approximately mid-May through mid-August.) This position is an excellent opportunity to network with City employees and to learn and work for a very progressive organization.

Duties

  • This position will assist the Project Manager with construction oversight of multiple facility maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Promote a safe work environment by following and reinforcing safety protocols.  Attend safety meetings and report potential hazards.
  • Participate in on-site field inspections to observe and verify contractor work for compliance with plans, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Support construction coordination efforts, including contractor communication, scheduling activities, and public notifications related to construction projects.
  • Conduct field surveys, measurements, and data collection to support current and future Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Assist with construction documentation, including inspection notes, photographs, and basic tracking of quantities and progress.
  • Gain hands-on exposure by assisting the Public Building Operations team with construction-related maintenance activities, material handling, and transporting tools or materials to job sites.
  • As necessary, this position will provide support to the Public Building Operations team by performing related clerical and field tasks and operations such as transporting materials to job locations and participating/assisting with building maintenance activities.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be currently pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Interest in construction, project management, and field operations.
  • Possess a basic understanding of construction methods, materials, and engineering concepts, including concrete and asphalt.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Experience with CADD and GIS are a definite plus.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, and comfortable working in a field-based construction environment.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a valid State of Illinois Class D Driver's License.  Applicants should possess a driving history with no moving violations for at least the last twelve (12) months.
